There are so many great happenings we have planned for April. Most importantly, we are launching a field-level survey this week that will shape the EO Capital Roadmap, to be published later this year. We want to highlight the opportunity for you to share your perspective with us! Read on for more information about the survey and the Roadmap.
Lastly, we are thrilled to see the growing recognition of the power of employee ownership across the globe. Just last week, at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, the amazing team at Apis & Heritage received the Skoll Award for Social Innovation. We are thrilled to see A&H—and employee ownership at large—uplifted and celebrated on the international stage. Congratulations, A&H!
Let’s keep building the Ownership Economy together!
Share your perspective: Help shape the Employee Ownership Capital Roadmap!
Yesterday, we shared with friends & partners at the Employee Ownership Ideas Forum that Ownership Capital Lab is leading the development of a field-level Capital Roadmap for EO.
Kicked off in January 2025 with interviews and research supported by a student team from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in partnership with McKinsey, the Roadmap will provide national data and insights on EO investing, outline investment growth opportunities, barriers, and solutions, and showcase scalable EO initiatives that can attract more capital. The Roadmap draws on lessons from broader impact investing and related sectors (e.g., gender lens, climate) to advance EO investing from a nascent to a more mature market, attracting significantly more capital.
As part of that work, we are gathering insights and perspectives from across the EO field. We would love to hear what you think are the key strategies, levers of and barriers to growth for EO. Please take 5-10 minutes to share your insights & perspective!
Questions? Comments? This is just the first of a number of opportunities to help shape the EO Capital Roadmap. Feel free to contact us with any ideas you want to share.
Employee ownership course for foundations, philanthropic institutions, and advisors
Worker-owners of Mandela Grocery Cooperative in West Oakland, CA
In case you missed it, we are launching a brand new course on EO investing for foundations, philanthropic institutions, and advisors, which will run from May through June. The course will begin with an introduction to employee ownership and then take participants on a deep dive into EO investing.
Who is the course for? Are beginners to the EO space welcome? How about seasoned pros?
The four-part course is designed for foundations, philanthropic institutions, family offices and philanthropic advisors. Both beginners and seasoned pros in the EO space are welcome. We will have tons of great content for you to explore, and we aim to make the information actionable and tailored to each participant’s situation and goals.
If you have questions as to whether this course is right fit for you, or just want to hear more about it, please reach out to us. You can email Katherine at katherine@ownershipcapitallab.capital.
NextGen investors for social impact: The power to scale EO
Two powerful, converging trends are creating one of the biggest opportunities in history for business and societal impact, both driven by generational shifts.
On one side, the succession planning movement is set to see an estimated 3 million businesses change hands in the U.S. alone. On the other, the intergenerational wealth transfer movement is expected to pass down $124 trillion by 2048. These parallel trends are paving the way for the next generation of investors—Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z—who are uniquely positioned to drive change and scale employee ownership by investing with a focus on social impact.
Watch the A&H awardee video from Skoll Foundation’s 2025 Awards for Social Innovation
We were thrilled to see Apis & Heritage be celebrated as a 2025 Skoll Award for Social Innovation awardee. Skoll Foundation honored A&H for its ability to “restore the American Dream by helping low- and middle-income employees become owners of their businesses when sellers are ready to retire, ensuring continuity for businesses and prosperity for workers and communities.” We could not have captured the power of employee ownership–and A&H’s powerful model–better.
Yesterday at the Aspen Institute's Employee Ownership Ideas Forum 2025, our founder Alison Lingane presented on the panel “Bridging the Gap: Institutional Investment and Employee Ownership.” She talked about the increased support from investors for EO in recent years, but how the need and opportunity remains for attracting scaled institutional capital. Lack of knowedge about returns and how the EO model works pose significant challenges to capital market adoption. She was joined by Ted Margarit, Managing Partner at Paralign Capital Partners; Catherine Toner, Managing Director of Impact Investing at Gary Community Ventures; and Lindsay Zizumbo, Executive Director of Sorenson Impact Fund.
If you’ll be at any of these upcoming gatherings, let us know!
Capital is a barrier to — and the biggest opportunity for — the growth of employee ownership. The Ownership Capital Lab focuses on capital as a growth and scale lever for employee ownership, and we have a vision to grow capital to finance employee ownership by $1B in the next 5 years. The Lab focuses on strategies for financing employee ownership with capital that allows for a slice of the value and return to accrue to the employees., identifying, piloting and supporting the uptake of (or directly launching) these strategies. The Ownership Capital Lab is fiscally sponsored by The ImPact.
